A date that is now solidly etched in the granite of history, everyone here at Flightwise remembers the events as they unfolded that shocking Tuesday morning 10 years ago.
That was the first year Flightwise (back then known as "fboweb.com") began offering flight tracking services... we weren't even storing the data long-term yet. But I personally remember hearing of the events on a live podcast while working on the website that morning, and immediately used the information at my disposal to determine the ID of the first flight that crashed into the North tower - before the rest of the world had figured it out. I'll never forget the eerie feeling I had once I had done the search and located the flight in the system. When I clicked the button to pull up the map - seeing that singular, ominous trail of a flight that abruptly ended in a place it was not mean to be - it instantly made me sick to my stomach.
This is the map I pulled up that morning, as crude as it was for our system these 10 years ago:
While the events of that day live on in our memories, and the reminders we see on the news today stir our emotions... let's try to remember why were attacked in the first place; we were attacked by a bunch of extremist, ignorant loonies who don't want us to live as a free people. We must all remember not to give them what they want - not to shrink back from the torch of fear they ignited that day. We all need to stand firm, braced with the righteous principles that this country was founded on... and the tolerance to see those principles carried through.
